Let’s Talk

SUSTAINABILITY

With the built environment contributing around 25% of the UK’s total carbon footprint, greater emphasis has been put on architects and designers to make more sustainable choices through material selection, with many taking a closer look at the lifecycle of a material.

We recognise that selecting a sustainable material is an important factor, but further to this, being transparent on how we measure our materials’ environmental impact is critical.

Zero-Carbon Driven Laminate

Partnering with EcoAct, our climate consultants, we have completed a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) of BioCarbon Laminates.

An LCA enables informed choices to be made about the materials used in construction with the aim of reducing the impact on the environment and moving towards a low carbon economy. An EPD, informed by an LCA, standardises the way that environmental data is quantified providing simple, accessible information that supports decision-making and helps us to work towards our sustainability goals.

By calculating the carbon emissions of BioCarbon Laminates whilst in our care we are able to take the responsibility of handling the carbon through our carbon management programme. As part of our programme, we have invested in carbon credits that are used to support projects across the world. From Wind Farms in India to the Kumasi Stoves off setting project in Ghana, where added benefits include employment and wealth management for developing countries. By offsetting our emissions whilst the material is in our care, we can ensure that we are taking sustainable steps forward to reduce our carbon emissions.

Updating our environmental product certification

At BioCarbon Laminates we are pleased to announce the latest updates (November 2024) to our environmental product certification (EPD).

Environmental data is essential to making informed decisions about the materials we use in the UK’s built environment industry. As the demand for sustainable products grows, we believe it is our responsibility to supply architects, designers, and project managers with the documentation they need to select materials that align with their project’s sustainability goals.

The EPD summarises our LCA in-depth report and is further validated by another third-party, EuGeos, and registered with EPD International.
